- Modified feathers form long eyelashes, which protect their eyes from dust.

- The eggs are laid three-to-five days apart and hatch three-to-five days apart.
- The older chick usually grows so fast the younger one cannot compete for food brought to the nest. At other times, the first hatchling may not be healthy and the second hatchling may thrive after the loss of the first one.
