Beginning in 2008, we opened the gates for School Tours of our facility. This half-day excursion is designed to educate children of any grade level abut pivotal issues concerning the support and welfare of animals everywhere. The education program is divided into four different areas of emphasis.

Number of Young: 5-15 eggs

 

- Australia's tallest native bird
- can move as fast as 30 mph
- emu foot has three forward-facing toes and no hind toe
- males perform all the incubation for the eggs and will sit on the nest for 52 days without eating, drinking or leaving the nest
- emus are not social birds except for young emus who stay with their father for 4-6 months
- female emus typically weigh more than males
- often ingest large pebbles to help their gizzards grind up food
